Evergrain by Epoch Composite Products, Inc. a Tamko company, is a lumber
alternative made from recycled plastics and wood materials. It's primarily post
industrial polyethylene and sawdust, containing over 50% recycled material.
- It's highly resistant to moisture and comes in several colors including,
Grey, Cedar, Redwood.
Performance characteristics
- A splinter free material with the workability of wood. It won't check,
split or rot and can be routed, sanded, nailed, drilled and even turned on a
lathe.
- No special tools are required and works with any deck fastener.
- Insect and termite resistant.
- Minor color variations can occur between boards.
Safety concerns
- Relatively
few safety concerns. When
working with Evergrain, use protective clothing, dust mask and eye
protection.
- A
non-biodegradable product, it should be disposed of properly. Do not burn
composite products.
Life expectancy
- Comes with a limited ten-year warrantee.
- Warranted against rotting, warping and mildewing.
Maintenance
- Virtually maintenance free, no need to paint or stain.
- Periodic cleaning may be necessary to remove dirt and restore to original
color.
Installation
Evergrain will expand and contract with changes in temperature. Width-to
width gapping is essential for both drainage and changes due to temperature
extremes. An 1/8 inch gap will satisfy most installation conditions. End to
end gapping is also necessary. Gap size will depend on length and temperature
at installation versus the highest anticipated temperature for your region. At
16 foot length, allow 1/16 inch end gap for every 20 degrees Fahrenheit
difference between installation temperature and the highest temperature expected
during the year. Example: 80 degrees Fahrenheit at installation with 100 degree
maximum temperature = 1/16 inch gap
- Evergrain can be installed by hand nailing or by nail gun.
- Using screws rather than nails will alleviate the problem of nail heads
popping up above the boards and pre-drilling the boards will help prevent the
mushrooming of the material up over the screw heads.
- Evergrain is not intended for use as a load-bearing post, beam and joist or
any other load bearing member.
